He grew up in President Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. His early education was acquired in the schools of his native county, after which he took a course at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mining in the Southwest, in the gold, silver and copper fields of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, engaged his principal energies throughout his business career.
