General Notes: Husband - Samuel McCowin
He grew to manhood on his father's farm and in early life was there employed. For one year he lived in Mercer County, but returned to Lawrence County as soon as possible. In 1841 he came to Darlington township, Beaver County, entering into negotiations for the purchase of the land of the Canal Coal Company, finding, after one payment had been made on the purchase price, that a clear title could not be obtained. He then bought one hundred and fifteen acres in the same township from Mr. Hughes, making payment byworking for him at exceedingly low rates, and lived there the remainder of his years. He raised sheep in large quantities, besides his farming operations, and became a prominent man in the community, as a Whig and Republican holding all of the local offices, with his wife holding membership in the Methodist Episcopal church.
