The father of Dr. Paxton died when the son was eight years old. Later, his mother married Dr. John Leslie Mercer, who, Dr. Mercer
He was born on a farm in Franklin Township, four miles west of Washington, Pennsylvania. He was well known all over the county, having taught school some ten terms, six near Canonsburg, one in Franklin and one in Buffalo Township and two at Canton, prior to entering upon medical practice. He was a graduate of the Western University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
In 1908 he sold out his medical practice at Eldersville, Washington County, where he had been located for nineteen years, and came to California [Washington Co, PA?].
