General Notes: Husband - Robert Rankin
The tradition is that four Rankin brothers had lived about four miles north of Londonderry, Ireland, and that two of them came to America, from one of whom Robert was a descendant.
He came with his family from County Derry, Ireland, in 1837, and settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife were natives of Londonderry, Ireland, emigrated to America in 1839, settled in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, and engaged in farming. [HAC 1889 II, 346]
He was born in county Donegal, Ireland, where he was reared on a farm and became a road contractor. In 1839 he came to the United States, settling in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on a farm which had been bequeathed to him by a cousin who had preceded him to America and had acquired seven hundred acres of land. Mr. Rankin made this farm his home during the remainder of his life. He affiliated with the Whigs, and was a member of the Presbyterian church. [HWC 1906 II, 297]
He was of County Down, Ireland, and married there. Mr. and Mrs. Rankin came with their family to the United States in 1839, settling in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, near Mr. Rankin's cousin, Major John Rankin, who had preceded them and was then operating a tannery. Robert Rankin had been a road builder in Ireland, but in his new home he became a farmer. [ONW, 998]
He and his wife were the parents of ten children.
