General Notes: Husband - Edward Willis Steeves, M.D.

He received his education in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, attending first the public schools and then St. Martin's Seminary. In 1894 he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, Maryland, graduating in the spring of 1898 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He then served one year in Bay View Hospital, Baltimore, being one of five resident physicians appointed by the medical colleges. After devoting two months to special study of nose, throat and chest troubles in the Baltimore City Hospital, he passed a successful examination before the Pennsylvania State Medical Board December 13, 1899. In February, 1900, he moved to Jacobs Creek, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he then engaged in the active practice of his profession, and where he became recognized as one of the most skilled surgeons and physicians of Westmoreland County. Dr. Steeves was surgeon for the Pittsburgh Coal Company and the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Company. He was medical examiner for the Metropolitan, the Equitable, and the Prudential insurance companies, and for all the fraternal societies in that part of the country. He was a member of Blythe Lodge, No. 593, F. and A. M., of West Newton, and was a Republican in politics. [HWC 1906 III, 518]

He received his education in the public schools, in St. Martin's Baptist Seminary and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, Maryland, from which last-named institution he was graduated in the class of 1898. Later Dr. Steeves took post-graduate work at the New York Polyclinic Hospital and at the New York Post-Graduate School and Hospital, specializing in diseases of children. After he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1898, he spent a year as interne at Bay View Hospital, Baltimore, and then located at Jacob's Creek, Pennsylvania, where he practiced for several years. Afterward he spent some time in other towns, and then was in Republic, Pennsylvania, for a number of years, eventually locating in Brownsville.
Dr. Steeves participated actively in the affairs of Brownsville, and particularly in those relating to education. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the Fayette County Medical Society. He was affiliated with Blythe Lodge, No. 593, Free and Accepted Masons, of West Newton, Pennsylvania; and, beginning in 1904, with Uniontown Lodge of Perfection. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He had a beautiful home, with seventy acres of land, near Merrittstown, Fayette County. [P-AH, 90]
