He was reared on the home farm. From the age of fourteen until thirty he drove a team to Baltimore, Wheeling, etc., and then engaged in the cattle trade. After he married he engaged in farming. In 1855 he bought his farm, and built a good dwelling, barn and tenement.
For many years he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Mumper was a trustee for fifteen years or more.

They reared four orphan boys.
