Although the immigrant ancestor of this family is supposed to have been born in Scotland, it is the tradition of the family that its origin is English, and that the name was formerly spelled Miner.

He is thought to have been born in Scotland. He was a cabinetmaker, and followed this trade at Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania, and in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. His political party was the Whig, and by religion he was a Covenanter. His death was due to an accident at a barn raising for a neighbor, where he was injured by the falling of a beam.
