He was educated in the public schools of Vanderbilt, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and began his active business life as a farmer working for others. In 1906 he purchased one hundred acres of the farm on which he had been employed several years and on which his mother had been reared by Henry Bowman and his sister Eliza. He built a modern farmhouse, had his farm well stocked, and in fertile well-tilled condition. He was a Democrat in politics, and served on the election board. He was an attendant of the Baptist church.
