General Notes: Husband - Samuel Thompson
He was reared on a farm and received a limited education in the old subscription schools. He engaged in farming and purchased a farm in 1850, and in the same year he engaged in the distilling business. He began with a small distillery of eight bushels capacity, enlarged it into an extensive building, and continued for twenty years in the farming and distilling business. In 1857 he removed to a residence in Bridgeport, and in 1879 engaged in the coal business. He came to own the Champion, Caledonian and Wood's Run Coal Works, that had a combined output of ten thousand bushels of coal per day. These three works were situated close together in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and produced a good quality of coal, which was in great demand in the Western and Southern markets. He owned seventeen farms, aggregating three thousand acres of good farming land. Seven of these farms were in Washington County, five in Fayette County, two in Iowa and three in Kansas, and were all underlaid with coal.
He was a director of the First National Bank of Brownsville for fifteen years, and also a director of the National Deposit Bank of Brownsville from its organization. He owned stock in the Citizens' Bank of Washington, Pennsylvania, and also of the Bridgeport Natural Gas Company. He and his nephew had a bank in Eureka, Kansas.
