He was a soldier of the Mexican war. [CBRWC, 364]

He came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, with his father in early life. He was reared on the farm, but turned his attention to milling soon after becoming of age, and built for himself a mill, later known as Ryland's Mill, in Brooke County, West Virginia, which he operated for many years.
