General Notes: Husband - Dr. Samuel Agnew
He was a famous physician. He practiced medicine at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from 1804 - 1834, in Missouri in 1835, Pittsburgh in 1836, and Philadelphia and Butler. On November 25, 1849, he fell off a canal boat at Temperanceville near Pittsburgh and died shortly after.
He received his preparatory education under the Rev. Alexander Dobbin, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and was graduated at Dickinson College, in 1798. He studied medicine under Dr. John McClellan, at Greencastle, and received the degree of M. D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1800. He began the practice of his profession at Gettysburg, but removed to Harrisburg in 1807. During the War of 1812, he served as surgeon with the army. He acquired a large and lucrative practice and rose to unusual eminence in his profession. "If I had an only son dangerously ill," said Prof. Samuel Jackson, of Philadelphia, "there is no physician between Philadelphia and New Orleans whose services I would sooner have than Dr. Agnew." His paper on the "Intermittents of the Susquehanna Region" is one of great merit, and attracted wide attention. Dr. Agnew was for fifteen years a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg.
