He was one of the oldest sons in a family of fourteen children, born of Scotch-Irish parentage.
Having purchased a 200-acre farm in Springfield Township, Mercer County, PA, the family removed from Allegheny County to this farm in March, 1835, where he resided until the spring of 1866, when he located in Mercer. Shortly after coming to Mercer County he, with his wife, joined the Associated Reformed, now Second United Presbyterian Church, of Mercer, of which he was chosen a ruling elder in 1855.

In 1836 he located on a tract of land in Mercer County, PA, three miles south of Mercer, and in 1838 the other members of the family followed.
