He was educated in the public schools and at the Tuscarora Academy. As a youth he served in his father's store, and the knowledge thus acquired was supplemented by a course at a business college. He then entered the Juniata Bank as a clerk. In 1876 he was transferred to the branch at Port Royal, of which he was cashier until 1894. He then became cashier of the Port Royal Bank which he was mainly instrumental in founding under the firm name of Pomeroy & Co. He was a member of its board of directors, and also a director of the Juniata Valley Bank, and of the First National Bank of Middleburg. In politics he was a Republican. He was a member of the State Legislature, 1883-84, and again in 1901-02.
