He attended the public schools of his native county; also two terms at Delmont Academy and two terms at New Alexandria (select) Academy; three years at Ligonier Classical Institute; and four years at Grove City College, from which he was graduated, June 17, 1906. On October 1, 1906, he took charge of the McElwain Collegiate Institute, as professor and principal, and on August 12, 1908, purchased the above mentioned institution, his plan being to strengthen its corps of instructors and reorganize it throughout.
