General Notes: Husband - John T. Cranmer

He was reared in Clay Township, Butler County, PA, and gained his school-book knowledge in the early schools, to which he walked a long distance. Later he learned the carpenter's trade and for thirty-five years was a contractor, working through three counties. He built twenty-three of the big barns which stood on the farms of old residents and often also built their houses and other structures. In 1890 he turned his attention to milling and purchased a mill in Butler Township, from John Ralston, who had built it. He thoroughly overhauled the mill and installed modern machinery. His power was supplied by a 60-horsepower gas engine and he ground buckwheat, wheat and other grains and sold flour and feed, doing a very large business.
