He was a mason by trade, and owned a farm in Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he died, aged over seventy years.

He was an ardent Abolitionist, taking an active part in politics, and serving his township as justice for many years. He and his wife were members of the Associate Reformed Church at Robinson's Run, later uniting with the U. P. Church at Venice.
