General Notes: Husband - William T. Stevenson

When a young man he worked at the printing trade in the Franklin, Pennsylvania, Spectator office, for one year, when his eye-sight failed, compelling him to quit. Subsequently he volunteered in and served as a soldier of the Union army during the Rebellion. After the war he engaged with his uncle, William Devore, in the mercantile business at Cooperstown, Venango County; and they removed their extensive business to Sandy Lake about 1873. Mr. Stevenson was a careful accountant, a popular salesman and successful merchant, and liked by all for his sociability. In politics he was a pronounced Republican. In religion he had been for many years a member and trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Sandy Lake.

As a young man he served in the civil war as a corporal in Company I, First West Virginia Cavalry Regi-ment; was mustered into service at Clarksburg, West Virginia, November 18, 1861, and was with his command until he was mustered out at Washington City, October 29, 1862, on ac-count of disability incurred in the line of duty. After recovering he returned to the army as a substitute, and served in the commissary de-partment. After the close of the war he took employment in a mercantile establishment at Cooperstown, Pennsylvania, and later became junior partner in the firm of DeVore & Steven-son, of which his uncle, William S. DeVore, was senior partner, at Sandy Lake.
