General Notes: Husband - James Agnew

He was born at Craigmore, Ireland, and migrated to Philadelphia in 1729. He started to move westward and finally secured land at Marsh Creek, York County, Pennsylvania; the area which was called Lancaster County in 1739 and was later Adams County. It was near Gettysburg. He built substantial buildings on this new land, although he did not secure title until several years later. He called his new home "Manor Mosque." He had come to America with a life long-friend, Arthur Patterson, who was a blacksmith. He worked for Patterson and learned the blacksmith trade.

He emigrated to Pennsylvania and settled in Donegal, Lancaster County, with Arthur Patterson in 1729. Both Agnew and Patterson were blacksmiths, and both were then single men. He was one of the first squatters on the Manor of Masque. He asked for a warrant for his land on Marsh Creek in 1738, and settled on it in 1739. This tract was situated in what became Highland township, Adams County. He had not yet obtained a title for it in 1762, and the question was not finally determined until 1802. He was captain of an Associated Company of York County, in 1756, and assisted in the defense of the frontier against the French and Indians.
