He attended the country school and worked on a farm until sixteen years of age. He graduated from high school in 1876, and from the Allegheny College in 1880. He taught school in Dickenson Seminary, Williamsport, Pennsylvania; preached about one year, and was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church. August, 1883, he accepted the position of Principal of the Emlenton Academy, Emlenton, Pennsylvania.
