General Notes: Husband - Robert Elder
After his [son, Joseph's, ???] death he removed to Maryland, afterwards returning to his old home near Harris' Ferry. About 1786, he went to Indiana County, Pennsylvania, where he died.
The progenitor of the family in America, he was born at Dromore, County Down, Ireland, and was of Scotch extraction. He came to the American Colonies in 1730, locating in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, about five miles from Harrisburg, and after the close of the Revolutionary War went to Indiana County with his family, making the journey over the mountains with pack horses, and locating in what later became Conemaugh township, in the wilderness. Here the family erected a temporary hut in the woods, and later succeeded in building a cabin from hewed logs, which structure was subsequently used as a blockhouse. In this building the pioneer died in 1790 or 1791. They were buried in Ebenezer Church cemetery. [HIC 1913, 960] It appears that there is confusion between this Robert Elder, his father Robert, and his son Robert.
When he came to his new home [Indiana County, Pennsylvania], his children, James, David, Robert and Ann, had reached maturity. He had one son by his first wife, who did not accompany the family, being brought up by his mother's people.
