His primary education was received in the public schools, and he completed his studies at Witherspoon Institute. He then entered the employ of J. & H. Schneideman, of Butler, as clerk, and worked for that firm, Harvey Colbert and others until 1879, when he was appointed clerk in the United States mail service, which position he held for ten years. In 1889 he formed a partnership with David E. Dale, under the firm name of Colbert & Dale, and they carried on one of the leading hat and gents furnishing houses in Butler. Mr. Colbert was an adherent of the Republican party, and in religion, he was a member of the Presbyterian church. He was connected with Butler Lodge, Number 272, F. & A. M., Butler Chapter, R. A. M., the K. of P., the R. A., and the B. P. O. E.
