He received a thorough common school education, and first found employment in a drug store in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, but in the spring of 1891 came to Dawson, Pennsylvania, and worked in Porter's drug store. During his services as clerk in the drug business, he had studied medicine and attended lectures at the Baltimore Medical college, from which he graduated in the spring of 1892, and in April of the same year opened an office in Dawson, where he developed a large and lucrative practice.
