General Notes: Husband - Robert Lacy Cochran

In his youth he learned the printing trade in Franklin, Pennsylvania, under John W. Shugert. Becoming an intelligent master of the art, and being fond of travel, he worked at printing in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and spent some time in Maysville, Kentucky. Returning to Franklin in 1853, he purchased the Venango Spectator, the Democratic organ of the county, and edited and published it for about eight years. He was a clear thinker, a concise and forceful writer, and by his judg-ment and accurate business methods he was successful as a publisher. During his editorship Mr. Cochran was elected Prothonotary of the county (1857 to 1860.)
Having read law with the firm of Myers & Kinnear, he was admitted to the bar Nov. 25, 1862. He did not engage in law practice, but turned his attention to financial business, for which he had an aptitude. He was one of the founders of the Bank of Franklin, after-wards incorporated as the First National Bank, of which he was the first cashier. Later, he became a partner in the Lamberton Bank, and for several years was its ac-tive manager. He always took a lively interest in public and political affairs, had a wide acquaintance with lead-ing men, and frequently took part in the councils of his party in county, State and national conventions. Personally and socially, he was one of the most interesting and pleasing of men. Being a close student of books and of men, and having a retentive memory, his conversation was enriched by apt anecdote and illustration, and flav-ored with a spice of "the Duffield wit'' that lent its pecu-liar charm. In his home life he was a model, always courteous and heartily hospitable, unselfish in his regard for family and friends. [Duffield Family, 72]
