He received a common school education, and learned the trade of molder, at which he worked for fifteen years. He moved to a farm of seventy acres in Conneaut Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1864, and thereafter abandoned his trade applied himself exclusively to farming. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. In politics, a Republican.
