Perkins L. Pryor.
Perkins L. Pryor, one of the oldest residents of the county, died at the old homestead in Rockland township at 10 o'clock on Saturday night. He celebrated his 91st birthday at his home on August 21 last, surrounded by a large circle composed of members of his family and neighbors and while feeble in frame, showed a keenness of intellect and realization of current events that remained with him up almost to the last moment of his life. He had been in bed less than a week preceding his death and on Saturday had received more than a dozen callers, designating each by name and referring to some incident that proved that his memory was still faultless. His dissolution came without a struggle, pain was spared him and he passed to his long rest as though sinking into a refreshing sleep, the reward of a blameless and well-spent life.
Mr. Pryor was born in Center county, Pa., August 21, 1815, but came to Rockland township with his father when he was four years of age and made that part of the county his home from then until his death. He assumed his share of the burdens of pioneer life, assisted in making the forests yield to agriculture and saw the camps of the wild indians transformed into fruitful fields. He ante-dated by many years the coming of the railroad, the telegraph and other modern institutions. He had been a life-long member of the Methodist Episcopal faith and more than 70 years ago assisted in founding the Rockland M. E. church, he being the last of the body of organizers to pass away. He filled every office of layman in the church with credit and ability and was a constant attendant at all services notwithstanding his weight of years. He served in many positions of trust in county affairs, was County Auditor, Justice of the Peace, County Commissioner and held many of the minor offices, introducing many reforms in county methods. When the first call for troops came from President Lincoln in the Civil War he gave three sons to the Union cause. One died in the rebel prison at Salisbury, another died at home from the effects of wounds and disease contracted while in the service and the third was mutilated by a rebel bullet. He is survived by his wife, who was 86 years of age last February, and to whom he was married in the church he assisted in founding, on April 11, 1837. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. B. Maitland, of Oil City, and Mrs. N. C. Jolly, of Rockland, and two sons, Abner James Pryor, on the old homestead, and E. E. Pryor, of Findlay, O.; 27 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren also survive.

The Late Mrs. Catherine C. Pryer. [Communicated.]
The funeral of Mrs. Catherine Cox Pryer, whose death was announced in these columns some days ago, was held from the M. E. church at Rockland on Thursday, March 18th, Rev. John Lusher, of Parker, officiating, assisted by Rev. Hewitt, of Rockland. Rev. Lusher spoke of the long and useful life of the deceased, having known her from his boyhood.
The deceased was born Feb. 5, 1820, in Stark county, near Canton, O., coming with her parents to this county a few years later. The remainder of her life was spent in Rockland, near the place of her death. She was married in April, 1837, to Perkins L. Pryer, whose death occurred two years ago, at the age of 91. They rounded out almost seventy years of married life. It has been the custom for many years for the numerous relatives and friends of the aged couple to gather at the home of their son, where they had lived for some years, on the birthday anniversary of the husband, much to the enjoyment of both. Since his death her birthday has been celebrated by a letter shower and on her last anniversary - Feb. 5th - she received more than fifty of these letters, which were a source of great enjoyment to the aged lady, she having been able to read all of them herself, as she retained her faculties to a remarkable degree until her death.
She took delight in relating incidents of the early days to those of the younger generations around her. She used to relate the story of her grandparents immigrating to this country many years ago, coming from Ireland. Both died on board the vessel in midocean and were buried at sea, leaving two little sons. One of these, Samuel, was the father of the deceased. He was cared for by another family crossing the ocean at the same time and settling in Ohio. He never heard of his brother again.
She was the mother of six boys and two girls. One boy died when a child, another in young manhood, while three of them served their country in the Civil War, the youngest dying in Andersonville prison. Another came home and died of disease contracted in the service, while the third served throughout the entire war and still survives, with a younger son, Elmer T., of Findlay, O., and two daughters - Mrs. J. B. Maitland, of Oil City, and Mrs. N. C. Jolly, of Rockland. She is also survived by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a faithful and quiet follower of the Master all her life and during her declining days many hours were spent in reading His Word.
