He attended the public schools of Chartiers Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, after which he learned the painting trade, with L. D. Smith of Canonsburg, and followed the trade for thirty-three years.
He and his family were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Canonsburg. In politics he was a Republican and for three years he served as a member of the Borough Council. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum.
