General Notes: Husband - Samuel Porter
He was a member of an old Irish family, long settled in County Armagh. Its American founders were Samuel and Joseph Porter, who emigrated to this country about 1825. The family was founded in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, by Samuel Porter.
He bought one hundred acres of land just southwest of Jamestown, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and resided thereon until his death.
Six children were born to him and his wife, of whom Samuel C. was the third in order of birth.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Cochran
She was a native of Ireland, her family locating in Greene Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, at an early day.
She and her husband had in their possession a number of interesting heirlooms connected with the history of the family both in Ireland and the United States. Among the former may be noted a spinning wheel one hundred and twenty years old [1909], which was presented to Elizabeth Cochran when she was a girl of fourteen and won the first prize for the finest linen exhibited at the Armagh county fair. A family catechism of 1794, a set of china dishes more than a century old, and a crude corn sheller which dates back more than three-quarters of a century, are also cherished mementoes of the family life both in Ireland and Mercer County.
