He spent his entire life in North Mahoning Township, near Trade City, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. In his early life he followed farming, conducted the hotel at Trade City, was engaged as a dealer in farm implements. He was also a pioneer well driller in that part of Pennsylvania, running a single beam Keystone portable drilling machine, which he operated in Indiana, Jefferson and surrounding counties. He was prominently associated with the English Lutheran Church, taking an active part in its work. He cared for his aged parents during their declining years and died on the Hoffman homestead.
