He attended school in Mercer County, PA, until he was fifteen years of age, when his parents moved on a farm in Slip­pery Rock Township, Butler County, where he remained until his marriage. He was manager of the Clutton General Store, at West Liberty, Butler County, and was a very active citizen of West Liberty and a member of the borough council. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
