He was born in Chautauqua County, New York. He remained at home assisting to till the home farm and receiving an education, until he was twenty-one years of age. He then began farming on his own account, and in 1854 came to Pennsylvania, and settled in Sparta, Crawford County, where he remained until 1874, and then removed to Dover, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where he engaged in fruit farming.
