He was born in Canonsburg, Chartiers township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and there received his early education. After his marriage he settled on a farm. He owned eighty-eight acres of the home farm, also fourteen acres in Canton township, and erected a good residence and farm buildings on the place, a good gas well being an other valuable feature of his farm. He was an active Republican, and held several township offices. He and his wife were both members of the United Presbyterian Church.
