General Notes: Husband - John Schwalm
He was born in Hesse-Cassel, Prussia, where he was educated. He came to the United States with his father, landing in New York on 14 August 1852. Immediately they headed west, winding up in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. John secured a laboring job with the Allegheny Valley Railroad, while his father started farming. John later worked with his father and maintained an interest in farming all of his life. In addition to farming, John was involved in various other business enterprises over the years. First it was the mercantile and mill business. Later he purchased and rebuilt the Ulam Hotel, renaming it the Schwalm House. He was also part owner of three coal mines in Westmoreland County. In 1882 he was defeated by sixteen votes when running as a Democrat in a heavy Republican county for a seat in the state legislature.
