He received the usual training of a farmer's boy, and took advantage of such educational advantages as were afforded by the schools in the vicinity of his home. He made a careful study of the best methods of farming, and became one of the leading farmers of Cumberland County, where he had a fertile farm of ninety acres. His farm had an excellent apple and peach orchard and was improved with good buildings, including a substantial barn 55 x 80 feet. The owner took pride in keeping his premises neat and attractive, and had the reputation of being a thorough and industrious agriculturist.
