General Notes: Husband - John Agnew III
Other sources give his birth date as January 20. [HJC 1917 II, 573]
He was one of the pioneers of Barnett township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, where he was successful in reclaiming a farm, worked in the lumber woods for himself as well as for others, and acted as pilot of the great lumber rafts that passed down the Clarion river and other streams. At the time of the Civil war he was a valiant soldier of the Union, enlisting twice.
He was an earnest and zealous member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which his beloved wife was his faithful coadjutor. He attended conference and served as classleader and Sunday-school superintendent; and was a close and appreciative student of the Bible. He always kept in touch with affairs of the day and was an unfaltering Republican. He filled various local positions of public trust, including those of township supervisor and school director. [HJC 1917 II, 573]
General Notes: Wife - Margaret Ann McNaughton
She was probably born near Helen Furnace, Highland Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. However, her parents moved to Fisher, Millcreek Township about that time, so she could have been born at Fisher. Her parents owned considerable acreage of land in both Highland Township and later in Millcreek Township (Fisher).
She was the community mid-wife in the Hominy Ridge, Jefferson County, area.
She was a strong and healthy person. In the book "Tales of the Clarion River", Margaret's son Wesley M. Agnew of Orange, California, writes, "In 1877 when I was a small boy, Fred McNaughton, brother of Margaret Ann, was rafting out of Maze's Gap on a shanty boat raft. Fred had his wife and his sister, Margaret Ann Agnew on the raft as cooks. He had two men on the front end of the raft operating the steering oar. They played out at Licking Bend and could no longer pull the steering oar. The raft was going "over the hill" (wrecking). Margaret Ann ran out of the cook house shanty, took the oar and steered the raft to safety."
She had red hair when she was born. When she got older her hair turned jet black and remained so until her death.
