He was born on the family homestead farm in Muddy Creek township, Butler county, PA, was reared a farmer, and remained with his parents until his marriage, when the farm was divided between him and his brother Isaac. In 1865 he removed to Centre township, lived there eight years, and then returned to the homestead, where he thereafter resided. He was a life-long mem­ber of the Presbyterian church, and in politics, he was a Republican.
