He was reared on a farm, educated in the common schools and Saltsburg academy, and in 1862 removed from Pennsylvania to Illinois, where he was engaged in merchandising for twelve years. In 1873 he returned to his native county and was engaged for seven years in business at Helena, a station on the W. P. railway. In 1879 he removed to Greensburg, and engaged in the wholesale and retail grocery and tobacco trade. He owned real estate in Bell township, besides considerable real estate in and around Greensburg. He was president of the Westmoreland Mutual Insurance Company; his business interests were chiefly in Westmoreland County.
