He was born in Scotland, and was a boy when the family came to the United States. He followed the trades of stone mason and carpenter, and became the owner of a large farm in Clover township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. He was a Democrat, and served as school director in the North Fairfield district. He held the office of deacon in the Church of Christ in West Bolivar, and was later an active member of the church of that communion in Summerville, Jefferson County.
