General Notes: Husband - Hon. Thomas [2] Stewart
He was reared and educated in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and after reaching his legal majority entered a tract of one hundred and forty acres of government land, for which he paid one dollar per acre. This land was situated in Toby township and was entirely covered with timber, which he gradually cleared off. He erected substantial log buildings on his land and devoted his attention to farming pursuits until his demise.
The American Stewarts have almost all been members of the Presbyterian church, a number of them having been connected with Concord, which was the first church of that denomination in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, having been established in 1807. Once upon a time some of the members of Concord said they could not send their children to Sabbath school because they were too poor to buy shoes for them. The next Sabbath the superintendent, Thomas Stewart, went to Sabbath school in his bare feet, thereby setting an example and fashion that the very poorest could easily follow.
Thomas Stewart was the incumbent of the office of associate judge of Clarion County for a number of years.
