General Notes: Husband - James Alfred Clark

Farm life occupied his time until his 24th year, when he answered his country's call by en­listing in the 121st PVI, on Aug. 24, 1862. Taking part in all the engagements of the Army of the Potomac as it surged forward and back­ward through the state of Virginia, he, on Dec. 13, 1863, during a charge on the enemy's works around Fredericksburg, was taken prisoner, along with forty-seven others of his regiment. The boys were hurried to Libby prison, Lee's army had been so greatly decimated during the many recent heavy engagements that the Confederate officials at Richmond at this time brought about an exchange of prisoners, as one of those in authority at the rebel capital was heard to say that "one of their northern-fed prisoners is worth half a dozen of our half-starved men". Mr. Clark had been a guest of Hotel Libby for twenty-eight days and had been paroled when the ex­change took place. He soon became able to go back to the old 121st and did what he could from then on to pay off the bill he owed while a guest of the officials at Libby.
