General Notes: Husband - Hail Clark

He worked on the canal, driving a team, &c., when only thirteen years of age, and then commenced to learn the trade of a wagon and carriage maker with Adam Stark, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and served six years, traveling one as a journeyman. In 1848 he located in Saltsburg, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, where he then pursued his trade.

In 1850 he organized the "Saltsburg Guards," with forty men, of which he was a sergeant, and a Mr. McIntire the captain. In 1858 the "Black Hornets" were formed into a company, of which he was the captain till it disbanded, in April, 1861. In April, 1861, he organized a company for the Civil War, but the state would not accept their services. In the spring of 1862 he raised a company of militia, of which he was the captain. They went to Harrisburg, when the state accepted their services, furnished arms, &c. In five days they were ordered home as the emergency was over. [HIC 1880, 396]
