General Notes: Husband - William M. Shira
He was born on the old family homestead, grew to maturity in his native township, and received a common school education. In 1854 he crossed the plains to California, in pursuit of the riches stored in the gold mines of that state, and followed mining until 1858. In that year he returned home via the Isthmus of Panama, bringing with him the accumulations of the four years spent in the mines. In the meantime he had sent sufficient money back to purchase a farm, upon which he then settled and resided.
The family were adherents of the United Presbyterian church, in which Mr. Shira filled the office of ruling elder for several years. Politically, he was a life-long Republican, took quite an active part in public affairs, and was elected prothonotary of Butler County in 1884, in which office he served three years. He also filled the office of school director many years, and was one of the leading farmers of the community.
