He was graduated from Wooster College, 0H, and McCormick Theo­logical Seminary in Chicago. He obtained a Doctor of Divinity degree through study at Western Seminary, Pittsburgh, PA, and Union Seminary in N.Y.C. He pastored Presbyterian churches in Orwell, Vienna, and Findley, Ohio, before ill health forced him to return to his home in Pennsylvania. He died of nephritis at the age of forty-two.

She was a direct descendant through both the paternal and maternal lines of Francis Cooke and Stephen and Elizabeth Hopkins, passengers on the voyage of the Mayflower, 1620.
