General Notes: Husband - Samuel Steele
He spent three years in learning the trade of a tanner and currier, with Jesse Cunningham, of Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. At the close of his apprenticeship he engaged with Mr. Cunningham, and remained until the latter's death in 1843, when he went into partnership with Mr. Cunningham's widow (his sister). In 1860 he withdrew from the firm, and erected a large tannery, which he operated alone until 1878, when he took in his son, William C. Steele, the firm being Samuel Steele & Son. This firm continued till the death of the senior partner in 1886.
He was a republican, and a member of the Presbyterian church.
He and his wife had eight children, four of whom were living in 1889. [BPCFC, 299]
