General Notes: Husband - Cornelius Lowe, Esq.

Smicksburg, Indiana Co, PA

"Mr. Lowe was an Englishman who came to this country [America] at eighteen years of age fifty years ago, and brought with him that best inheritance of youth-a good religious education, enforced by the prayers and Christian life of both his father's and grandfather's home. Like many others he came to improve his condition in life, and, like them, had to toil in poverty and obscurity. But he brought to his purpose not only integrity and principle, but patience, industry and much of that shrewdness and vigor of mind, which for many years made him a marked and influential man in Indiana county [Pennsylvania]. By diligent application to the farm and the market, he succeeded in securing for himself a comfortable competency, and the means to give his numerous children a moderate start in life. . . . . Mr. Lowe was in all respects, a more than ordinary man." - Ephriam Miller
He held the office of Justice of the Peace for many years, and a practicing attorney once said of him: "If you want a clear, honest statement of the law in your case, go to Squire Lowe; but if you want advice how to evade or circumvent the law, go to somebody else."

He was born in Derbyshire, England, and came to Wheatfield township [Indiana County, Pennsylvania?] in 1830, and farmed for about eighteen months, and then removed to Mifflin County, lived there and in Huntingdon County for ten years, being engaged in boating, warehouse keeping, teaching school, &c., as circumstances permitted. He came to what is now West Mahoning township, Indiana County, in 1841, and engaged in farming on the E. N. Ritchey property. In 1856 he removed to Smicksburg, and engaged with James Condron as a joint partner in a store. The firm continued for three years, and for the succeeding thirteen years Mr. Lowe continued the business on his sole account. Beginning in 1854 he acted as justice of the peace, his term expiring in 1881.

Some of the children listed with his second wife may have been offspring of his first wife.
