General Notes: Husband - James M. Chaney
He was born in Coon Island, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and passed his early years on the home farm, receiving a common-school education. On October 13, 1862, he enlisted in Company H, Fourteenth Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, and served till the close of the war. He took part in the engagements at White Sulphur Springs, VA, Beverly, WV, Droop Mountain, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, and numerous other minor conflicts. On June 5, 1865, he was honorably discharged, and coming home worked on his father's farm. After his marriage he first located a quarter of a mile east of West Alexander. In 1874 he purchased the "Joseph Alexander" farm, situated about three and a half miles north of West Alexander, in Donegal township. He then engaged in farming on this place, and dealt largely in stock. Politically he was a Republican, and though he was elected to numerous township offices, he was not a politician. In religious connection he and his wife were both members of the Presbyterian Church.
