General Notes: Husband - Zadock Walker Phelan
He was reared in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, and educated in the college. He learned the cabinet-maker's trade and carried on the furniture business in Waynesburg; then went to Kansas and shared the struggles of that young state, and in 1884 he began a business as manufacturer, foundryman and machinist, as a member of the firm of Bower & Phelan.
He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he held many important positions. He was a strong advocate of the temperance cause and voted the Prohibition ticket. He was the first county chairman of the party, and a candidate on the first ticket issued by the party.
