He was a farmer; was a democrat, held various township offices and was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church at Laurel Hill, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, for a number of years.

He had six children with his second wife; three were still living in 1889. He had two children with his third wife; only one was still living in 1889.
