General Notes: Husband - Jacob Smith Lobingier

He received a fair education in select schools and Washington college, which he attended for one year. He improved upon the limited educational privileges of his youth by constant reading and self-study. He always followed farming and for a number of years successfully operated a coal mine. His home farm consisted of one hundred and seventy-five acres besides which he owned one hundred acres of good timber land in another part of the township. He was a republican but always refused to hold office. He was very useful in his community and township, where he was frequently called upon to act as executor, administrator and assignee. He and his family were members of the Reunion Presbyterian Church of Mount Pleasant, of which he was an elder. [HWC 1906 iii, 298]

He assisted his father in caring for the homestead and after his marriage continued to farm a portion of home tract and on the death of his father took over the entire estate. For a number of years he successfully operated a coal mine, manufactured coke and shipped it to Pittsburgh in the early days of steel making. But he always followed the independent and quiet life of a farmer and was much interested in the growing of fruits, including a large vineyard, which was a distinct innovation in the neighborhood. He was a faithful and diligent elder in the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church for a period of forty years. He declined many opportunities to be a candidate on the Republican Ticket.
