He was educated in the public schools of Delaware Township, Mercer County, PA, and from early boyhood was more or less connected with the Pymatuning Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of which his father was secretary. In February, 1885, he came to Greenville and began clerking, while at the same time conducting an agency for the Pymatuning Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In January, 1887, he succeeded his father as secretary of this company. In 1888 he was the leading spirit in the organization of the Keystone Mutual Storm Insurance Company. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He
belonged to the Republican party, and was a member of the P. H. C.
