He came with his father to Morris township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, from New Jersey in 1801. He remained with his father until about seventeen years' of age, receiving such an education as the times and surroundings afforded. After leaving the paternal roof, he worked about in various places at sundry things until 1821, when he married.
